What is GST?

Goods and Service Tax (GST) is an indirect tax in India on the supply of goods and services merging all earlier taxes like VAT, CST, Service Tax, Excise Duty, etc. GST came into effect on 01/07/2017. GST is levied only on value addition at each stage since under this input tax credit paid at the time of procurement is available. Thus, End Client / Consumer will bear only the GST charged by the last dealer in the supply chain.

GST Registration

Under GST rule, it is mandatory for businesses when their turnover exceeds Rs. 20 lakhs (Rs 10 lakhs for NE and hill states) to register as a normal taxable person. This process of registration is called GST registration. Only a registered business unit can charge and collect GST on the taxable supplies of goods and services made by him. GST is charged on the sale value of the products or services offered. Registered Person can claim the amount of GST incurred on input (input tax) as Input Tax Credit while filing returns. Under this, the incurred GST can be deducted from the amount of GST charged (output tax) by the registered person.
